Meet Smitty

N. Smith “Smitty” Hagopian was born in Massachusetts as the youngest of 4 kids to traditional, conservative parents. He went to high school at a small Christian boarding school where he was the President of his class. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English (Departmental Honors) from the University of Massachusetts in 1985.
Smitty then taught English for 2 years at a Christian school in Indiana, then another year at a similar school in Los Angeles before deciding to go to law school at the University of Idaho.
In his first year, Smitty was chosen to represent the University of Idaho College of Law in the National Moot Court competition which was held in New York. During the summers between law school years, Smitty interned at an insurance defense firm. As a 3rd year law student, Smitty served as 1 of 3 Judicial Officers on the University-wide Student Discipline Panel, hearing cases regarding alleged cheating or other breaches of University behavior policy.
Shortly after graduating law school, Smitty married a fellow lawyer who soon obtained her “dream job” in Orlando, FL. The Hagopians had their first 2 children while in Florida, but soon recognized that they preferred to raise their children themselves, rather than with the help of a daycare, and heeded the call to return to the Northwest for a better quality of life for their family. They were especially attracted to the eastern (and eventually, northeastern) part of Washington for the abundance of recreational activities available here.
Smitty has enjoyed hiking and skiing all of his life, and while in Idaho, he became an avid fly fisherman and hunter. He has great passion for those pursuits to this day, and is grateful to call Washington State home.
Legal Experience
After moving to Wenatchee, WA, Smitty was an associate for 5 years at a small firm before opening his own firm, which he ran for 21 years. In 2016, Smitty was asked to serve as a Pro Tem (part-time) Superior Court Judge for Chelan and Grant Counties, which he did for over 2.5 years, hearing all types of cases (except adult felony criminal matters) over that time period.
After all of that time in the courtroom trenches and on the bench, Smitty gave up his small business along with its lucrative paycheck and the freedom to determine his own schedule, and moved full-time into the service of his community, intending to finish his legal career as a prosecutor. After 4 years of serving as the Sr. Deputy Prosecutor in Douglas County, the opportunity arose to live and work in Stevens County. With his 3 children grown and out of the nest, he gladly accepted, so that he could finally build on his previously owned property in Stevens County. Smitty transferred to Stevens County where he lives and serves as the Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the County since August, 2023.
As a prosecutor, Smitty has prosecuted felony charges of all types, including sexual assaults, domestic violence, drug possession and deliveries, white collar crimes, arson, burglary, robbery, murder, and many other crimes. He has practiced in every level of our State’s courts including the Court of Appeals.
